?Did you know that the first magazine for teens to hit the newsstand was Seventeen, way back in 1944? A few more magazines soon followed the trend and three main magazines, Seventeen, YM and Teen, enjoyed almost total domination of the teen magazine market until the late 1990s when things changed dramatically. That’s when the Baby Boomer generation became teenagers, and some 30 million teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 became the fastest growing segment of the American population. Teen magazines were suddenly big business and the industry blew up with many new names jumping into the youth market.
Today, things have changed thanks to competition from the online world, and print publications in general are not nearly the dominant business and thriving advertising market they once were. However, the teen magazine market has proven to quite resilient, and when the print magazines are combined with representative websites, it has proven profitable. Today, the teen magazine market continues to thrive and new titles enter to fray with regularity. Some new teen magazines will make it, others may not, but it seems there is room for many different titles aimed at the increasingly influential teen audience, both online and off. Those magazines that can address the young, net-savvy audience and provide a combination of content that includes frequently-updated news, teen celebrity gossip, polls and quizzes, original articles, message boards, chat, interactive contests and anything else of interest to teens, will continue to be popular.
